LUNAR NEW YEAR

Start with a cultural sampling of celebrations throughout Asia, and then make a paper cut of the current zodiac calendar animal, or another.  Using just paper, scissors, and glue, exercise the concept of positive and negative space, and the almost-lost arts of cutting and gluing, crucial foundational small motor skills.  The slideshow and activity can also be designed to focus on other Asian or cultural paper cutting traditions, like Papel Picado and Latinx heritage, or Mid-Autumn Festival events.

Or, combine the folk arts of paper cutting and making shadow puppets to create moving toys with just paper, scissors, and your hands.  Add the concept of movement and energy to those of shadow and light, and puppets will come to life, move, wag, and bark!
